I am devastated to learn of Gene’s passing. Although he and I lived in the same neighborhood, we didn’t become acquainted until many months following the hurricane. I thought the world of Gene. He was funny, caring, thoughtful, and generous. He was one of the most selfless people I’ve ever had the pleasure of knowing. I adored his little dog Lucy, too. She’d occasionally come visit me and since she wasn’t supposed to roam the neighborhood we had a routine where I’d hand her a treat as soon as she showed up at my door and then she’d quickly head back down the road to her house. Gene went out of his way to make people happy, putting others before himself and going without if it meant that he could help someone else in need. I will never forget his friendship, his laughter, and his genuine concern for the well being of others, myself included. I feel so fortunate to have known him and even though our friendship was brief, it was meaningful and I will never forget him and I will always be grateful for the kindness he showed me. My deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences go out to everyone who knew and loved Gene.
