Robert Cleavland LeBert

1942 ∼ 2019

Robert "Bobby" LeBert, 77, of Sour Lake, passed away Monday, August 12, 2019, at Harbor Hospice of Beaumont surrounded by his loving family. Bobby was born February 8, 1942, in Beaumont. He is preceded in death by his birth parents Charles LeBert and Bertha Gilda Lee, and his God parents Jean Esay Hidalgo, and Lola and Coy Sadler.

A long-time resident of Sour Lake, Bobby was a retired lineman/serviceman for Entergy. He was a United States Air Force Veteran serving during the Cuban Missile Crisis. In his earlier years, Bobby's passion was racing cars. He was a popular driver at the Southeast Texas dirt tracks, claiming numerous championships over many years. Bobby also used his talent restoring cars, especially the Datsun Z class. He would later trade his time on the track to time on the lake, where he was a great angler, winning many fishing tournaments. He and his wife, Nobie, started the Bobby LeBert fishing guide service, helping create great memories for all those they brought fishing. He was a member of St. Raymond Catholic Church in Sam Rayburn, Texas. Bobby will be greatly missed by all who loved him.

Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 32 years, Nobie Jo LeBert of Sour Lake; daughter, Rachel Leigh Cox and husband Robert of Silsbee; brother, Johnny Hidalgo and wife Rosary of Sour Lake; brother-in-law, Brian "Kent” Tanner and wife Aileen of Sour Lake; granddaughter, Rhaleigh Elanna Cox; nephews, Scott Hidalgo, Trey Hidalgo, and Clifford Tanner; nieces, Courtney Smith, Tiffany Biggars, Ashley Smith, and Debbie Watson; great-nephew, Truett Tanner; great-nieces, Whitney Tanner, Mandy Hinson, Kari Leon and Courtney Yates; the Lake Sam Rayburn fishing community, and a host of friends.

A service of remembrance will be Friday, August 16, 2019, at 10:00 a.m. at Faith and Family Funeral Services, Inc. with Reverend Bill Fabriguze officiating. Bob LeBert raced cars with my Dad, Frank O'Pry. I spent my teenage years at the race track. I remember Bob as being a very nice man. He was also good friends with my Aunt and Uncle, Wilma and Elmer Yellott. My deepest condolences to his family.

Prayers for the family, especially Nobie. I remember Bobby from GSU/Entergy and also from OLOV in Sour Lake. He was a serviceman to the core, always willing to help others.

He was such a good friend and fishing buddy to my dad, Justin Alford. Also a good husband to my aunt, Nobie Jo. I had never heard of people putting out trees for the fish until he and my dad, and Dan, made it a project. What a bunch of characters. Lots of love for them.

The first time I knew anything about Bob LeBert was when I was about 13 years old when we drove over to Cleveland to watch the races. That was about 1968. I remember how I liked that school bus yellow #20, "57 Chevy that Bob drove. I liked the way Bob drove and I want to say he won the feature that night. When H&B Speedway got kicked off good in about 1969, my dad started sponsoring and working with Teddy Bryant on the #3 car. We got to know Bob pretty well from visiting and joking around in the pits between races. The guys in our crew and the guys in Bob's crew were friends and we helped each other a lot. Between Bob and Teddy, they won a lot of features at both H&B and at Motorama. Bob was as fine of a competitor as you could ever find on a dirt track. He drove clean, took care of his car, won a lot of races, and seldom ever had a disagreement with another driver. In my opinion, Bobby was a fantastic guy and he will be sorely missed. May The Good Lord open wide The Pearly Gates for Bob Le Bert!
