Melvin Leon Surratt

1947 ∼ 2024

Melvin Leon Surratt, 76, of Thicket, Texas passed away on Thursday, April 4, 2024, at his residence. He was born in Queen City, Texas on April 10, 1947, to the late Robert Lee Surratt and Grace Odell Williams.

Melvin was a great friend and neighbor. He loved helping people, whether it was fixing things, mowing lawns or even hanging sheetrock. He had many talents. He was a pipe fitter and worked as a mechanic for Ford for a few years. Then Melvin was employed by Lumberton ISD in the maintenance department, from which he retired after 30 years. In their words, he was "the light of the district and made sure there was never a dull day." Melvin was also a prankster, loved to joke around and had a dry sense of humor. He loved old music and playing his guitar. His favorite days were spent serving the Lord at the Thicket Church of God (especially when food was served) and when he could be outside mowing.

He is preceded in death by parents; wife, Linda Surratt; and sister, Clarene Hartzo.

He is survived by his sister, Willow Dean Brashier; Family friends, Becky Lindsey and husband Chris Lindsey, Jan Marcontell and husband Ricky Marcontell, Traci Burns and husband Coty Burns, Ryleigh Lindsey, Korbin Lindsey, Abigail Lindsey, and Alexis Burns; longtime neighbors, Bunky McMahon and wife Linda McMahon; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Serving the family as pallbearers are Chris Lindsey, Coty Burns, Christopher Tomlinson, Steve Wright, Josh Thorsen, and James Dean Moore. Honorary pallbearers are Ricky Marcontell, Bob Lindsey and Bunky McMahon.

A visitation will be held on Monday, April 8, 2024, from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm at Thicket Church of God, Thicket, Texas. Funeral Services will begin at 11:00 am on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, officiated by Rev. Mark Ainsworth at Thicket Church of God, Thicket, Texas. Interment to follow at Felps Cemetery, Thicket, Texas.

Mr. Melvin was a good, kind and generous Godly man. I was his insurance agent for 20 years. After Ms. Linda passed and he found out how much I loved chocolate, he ALWAYS had chocolate candy and soft peppermints for me. We will miss him. He is happy now he is reunited with his loving wife and his SAVIOR. Love ya Mr. Melvin, see ya someday. Lesha
