My mother was a beautiful, creative, sensitive and smart woman. She was also tough , with the greenest thumb I’ve ever seen! Mama loved to work in the garden. She was also a great cook! I feel so blessed to have just a small portion of her talent passed to me. There are tons of funny stories to write about her and she loved to laugh! I’m going to only tell one. It was early summer on a Saturday morning we had planned a fishing trip to Blocks Lake, a private lake just outside of Buna TX. We loved going there it was great for Crappie, Catfish, some Bass and perch. It was quite a drive from our house and to get there early we had to leave the house around four am. We had all gotten up and rushed to get ready, jeans and t shirts, sturdy shoes for running from bank to bank and dusty trails around the lake, searching for the best spot. Mom made sure everything was packed for the day, sandwiches ,chips, potato salad, sodas, suntan lotion, and whatever else she thought we would need and Daddy loaded the car with it all! Bait, tackle, fishing poles were added. By almost four we were rushing out the door to load up in our car. Let me add here that this particular day it was pitch black this early. As mom stepped outside she let out a shriek, “ Harvey, I’m blind! I can’t see a thing! And my dad says what are you talking about! She said again a little louder and more frightened that she could not see anything! My dad is at this point helping her down the sidewalk to the car. Once he opened the door and sat her in the seat he burst out laughing , she was so mad at him for laughing at her! He said you can’t see because you have your sunglasses on! She replied, Oh ! She was a little flustered and embarrassed! After a minute she laughed too! On this particular day in all the rushing and trying get everything either on or packed she had grabbed her sunglasses instead of her clear glasses! It was classic mom! This story has been retold more than once over the years! But I will say this my dad loved her more than anything in this world! It would be safe to say he worshipped her! That old Percy Sledge song , “When A Man Loves A Woman” describes that love pretty good. Mama you will be missed by us all! And we will see you and Daddy on the other side!
