Laurie Jane Long

1964 ∼ 2026

Laurie Jane Long, a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. passed away peacefully on April 10, 2026, at her home surrounded by loving family. Born on April 1, 1964, in Los Angeles, California, Laurie’s life was a tapestry of love, dedication, and vibrant spirit that touched all who knew her.

For 30 years, Laurie served as the county clerk for Liberty County, a role in which she exhibited unwavering commitment and care. Her professional life was marked by integrity and a strong sense of duty to her community. Yet, it was within the walls of her home and the hearts of her family where Laurie’s true legacy blossomed.

Known as the steadfast caretaker and the glue that held her family together, Laurie stood resolutely by her loved ones through every challenge, always ready to provide comfort and support. Her family was her world, and her pride and greatest joy radiated from the love she held for her children and grandchildren, who knew deeply how cherished they were.

Laurie was beloved by everyone she met. Her adventurous spirit brought joy and lightness to those around her; she was never heard to be spoken of in any but the kindest terms. She embraced life fully, finding delight in fishing, exploring casinos, traveling with her husband James whenever they could, and nurturing her passion for plants in her greenhouse—a sanctuary where her love for nature thrived.

She leaves behind her loving husband, James Long; her devoted children, Matthew L. Quinn and his wife Jamie, James H. Long and his wife Jamie, and her daughter Crystal Long. Laurie’s spirit lives on through her thirteen grandchildren, who were the center of her heart. She also is survived by her brothers Virgil Mefferd, Louis Mefferd and his wife Sylvia, and her sister Janelle Dzik. Laurie’s lifelong best friend, Marti Neve, along with Marti’s husband Don, remained a treasured part of her life. Her family was beautifully completed by her beloved furbabies—Binky, Boomer, and BamBam—and extended family and friends who held her dear.

Laurie was preceded in death by her father, Virgil Mefferd; her mother, Edna Jane Johnson Mefferd; and her brothers, Mitchell Mefferd and Kirby Mefferd.

A visitation will be held on April 17, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Faith & Family Funeral Services, Inc., located at 40847 TX-105 PO Box 220, Batson, TX 77519. This will be followed by a Celebration of Life from 12:00 p.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the same location, where family and friends can gather to honor the extraordinary life Laurie Jane Long lived.

Her enduring legacy of love, strength, and kindness will remain a beacon for all who were fortunate enough to know her. Laurie’s remarkable journey reminds us of the power of devotion and the lasting impact of a heart that truly cares. She will be deeply missed, forever remembered, and eternally beloved.

Some of the best times us girls had was spending time with her and Cissy and them trying to corall us lol and Laurie telling us if we spent more time fishing and less time in the bar we'd get life figured out! She was amazing, she loved me the same at 25 punk kid as she did when I was 47. She will greatly missed and always loved. Our hearts and prayers go out to all her family and friends.

As broken as our family was Laurie was the one that opened her arms to help and heal our family. Laurie stepped up to take care of Mom and it didn't stop there as she helped Mitch, Kirby and Howard in times of despair and they lived in constant grief making it a full time job. Jesus has received Laurie with open arms to a place of comfort and peace. I know she will forever be missed. Laurie I am sorry we didn't get to spend more time growing up together. We Love you.
