James Vernon Scott Sr.

James Vernon Scott Sr, 81, of Saratoga, TX passed away April 17, 2019, at Liberty Health Care Center in Liberty, TX.

He was born March 21, 1938, to Hugh and Annie Barrow Scott in Sour Lake, TX. James worked in various fields including oilfield, construction, security, and later on, he took up selling produce and sweet potatoes, which netted him the nickname Sweet Potato Man. For the past 5+ years, he devoted his time to taking care of his wife. He had numerous hobbies including working around in the yard and spending time with the grandkids. James also enjoyed selling produce and talking with the many people that stopped to buy from him.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Hugh and Annie Scott; brother, Tommy Scott; sisters, Mildred Lott, and Patsy Ainesworth; and sons, James Jr, and Randolff Scott.

Those left to cherish his memory is his wife of 55 years and 10 months, Mary Lou Scott of Saratoga; sons, Johnny and Liz Scott of Saratoga, Jerry Scott of Saratoga, George Scott and wife Crystal of Saratoga, Henry Scott and wife Charlene of Fred, TX, and Jack and Cecile of Saratoga; daughters, Christine Rose and husband Kelly of Hull, and Bertha Beech and husband Bobby of Fred, TX; brothers, Robert Scott and wife Ruth of Sour Lake, and Billy Scott and wife Kathy of Saratoga; sister, Peggy Biano and husband Buddy of Daisetta; grandchildren, Krista, Johnny, Laura, Wallace, Patrick, Daisy, George, Cody, Hailey, Ryder, Chasity, Holly, Heather, Samantha, William, Justin, Rosa, and Noe; great-grandchildren, Dixie, Angel, Darryl, Chasity, Heather, McKinsie, Harry, and Auna; numerous nieces and nephews and a host of loving friends.

A service of remembrance will be Tuesday, April 23, 2019, at 4:00 p.m. at Faith & Family Funeral Services with Reverend Frank Aragon officiating, cremation to follow. A gathering of Mr. Scott’s family and friends will also be Tuesday, April 23, 2019, from 11:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. at Faith & Family Funeral Services.

I think my favorite memory of Mr. Scott would have to be one particular Sunday morning when he came to the store bearing a freshly made sweet potato pie, paper plates, and plastic forks. We stood right there at the counter, eating pie, and I laughed myself silly because he and Papa were bickering back and forth the whole time. It was a good morning. I am so very sorry for your loss.
