Obituary

Billie Jean Hughes

(née Daniel)

May 16, 1936 – April 23, 2026

Billie Jean Hughes, born Billie Jean Daniel, passed away on April 23, 2026, at the age of 89. She was born in Batson, Texas, a middle daughter of 6 girls born to Ernest Daniel and Edith Barnes Daniel.

Faithfully married to her husband Walter “Buster” Hughes for 64 years, she loved her family fiercely. Her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and her sisters were her greatest joys.

Deeply devoted to her faith in Jesus, Billie was a lifelong member of Central Baptist Church in Daisetta, Texas.

Billie enjoyed simple things - taking walks, reading novels and cookbooks, yardwork, and watching her stories. She loved southern gospel music. She was an amazing cook. A lifelong vegetarian, she could cook a pot roast and pan of bacon to rival any chef, and firmly believed “oleo” and sugar went in everything. Red was her favorite color, and she loved her rose bushes. She was independent and feisty, and she loved fiercely. She was always ready to greet a neighbor, a friend, family, with a pot of coffee and a warm welcome.

Billie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Walter “Buster’ Hughes, her son Larry Wayne Hughes, granddaughter Jamie Hughes, sisters Katherine Joy, Melba Lawson, Corine Lawson, and Lorine Kiber.

She is survived by her son Doug Hughes and his wife Teresa; sister Ernestine Barr; grandchildren Keisha Maxey and husband Randy, Kelli Smith and husband Kyle, Douglas Hughes, Brittany Riveros and husband Carlos.

She is survived by her great-grandchildren – Chloe Maxey, Zane Maxey, Kody Smith, Konnor Smith, Walter Hughes, Lanxton Hughes, Olivia Hughes, Raylynn Tucker, Jade Riveros, Madison Beardon, and Harper Rogers.

She is also survived by a host of other family members and friends whom she loved dearly.

A graveside service in her memory will be held Saturday, May 2, 2026, at 10am, at Guedry Cemetery in Batson, under the direction of Faith & Family Funeral Services, with Pastor Leslie Gaines of Central Baptist Church officiating.
