Sylvia M. Jones, 99, left this world on February 3, 2025, surrounded by her loved ones. She was born on June 20, 1925, to George Herford, Sr., and Winnie Townson Herford. Sylvia grew up in Batson, Texas as the middle child of 13 children in a happy and loving home.
At the age of 23 she married the love of her life, Roland Truman Jones, on July 10, 1948, and the happy couple moved to Lake Jackson and raised their family there. When Sylvia retired from Brazosport School District, she and Roland moved to Beaumont, Texas in 1981 to enjoy their retirement near a number of siblings already in the area.
Sylvia, a long time Christian and servant of God, became an active member of Woodland Baptist Church in Beaumont regularly cooking for various functions and multiple groups. In 2004 Sylvia lost her beloved husband of 56 years to brain cancer but Sylvia remained in Beaumont serving her God, church and loved ones until she moved to New Braunfels, Texas in 2012 to be near her daughters and beloved granddaughter. Sylvia did not move to a senior living facility until 2024 at the age of 99.
Sylvia is preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Roland, her son Wayne Slankard, grandson Chuck Slankard, her brothers George Herford Jr., Ed Herford, Lamar Herford, Byron Herford, Jim Herford, Benny Herford, Henry Herford, and Lloyd Herford along with sisters Winnie Walker, Elva Burlin and Betty Underwood.
She is survived by her daughter Rolane Hardy of New Braunfels, Beverly Walker (Bob) of Harrison, AR, grandchildren Bryan Scanlan of Austin, Texas, Brandie Ingram (Bruce) of New Braunfels, Texas, Aaron Walker (Kathryn) of Austin, Texas, Christopher Walker (Amanda) of Longmont, CO., great-grandchildren Brandon and Brady Fischer of New Braunfels, Texas, Jasmine, Aurora and Jameson Walker of Longmont, CO., Madelyn and Hazel Walker of Austin, Texas., brother, Walter Herford, plus a long host of loving cousins, nieces, nephews and countless dear friends.
Honoring Sylvia as pallbearers are Bruce Ingram, Brandon Fischer, Brady Fischer, Bryan Scanlan, Aaron Walker, and Chris Walker.
A graveside service will take place on Monday, February 10, 2025, beginning at 11:00 AM at Guedry Cemetery, Batson, Texas. Interment to follow.
