George Daniel McGinnis, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully in Liberty, Texas at his residence on March 17, 2025, at the age of 81. Born on January 11, 1944, in Cleveland, Texas, Dan lived a life filled with love and laughter, leaving behind countless cherished memories for his family and friends to hold dear.
A proud Liberty High School graduate, Dan, was known for his sharp intellect and mathematical skills. He had a lifelong passion for reading, often immersing himself in books, and found joy in simple hobbies like collecting knives and arrowheads. His love for animals was profound; he adored his dog Sox, who was a constant companion through the years.
A man of many talents, Dan served in the Army with honor, working in the Treasury Department during the Vietnam War. His service was marked by pride and dedication, qualities that defined much of his life. Upon returning home, he found solace in activities that brought him closer to nature: fishing, hunting, and working his cattle on his land. He also enjoyed riding his tractor and playing poker with friends, always relishing the camaraderie these moments brought.
Dan had a flair for life’s simple pleasures, whether it was watching his favorite westerns like "Gun Smoke," enjoying delicious meals, or indulging in his favorite treat, Blue Bell ice cream. His love for music resonated with the melodies of Elvis Presley and Rod Stewart, which often could be heard playing in the background as he shared stories and laughter with those around him.
Dan's heart was wholly devoted to his family. He celebrated every milestone, every gathering, and every laugh shared, crafting an unbreakable legacy of love and togetherness that will ripple through generations. He loved late-model Dodge trucks; they symbolized his hard-won achievements, particularly savoring the joy of purchasing his first new vehicle in 2015—a testament to his practical nature and the culmination of dreams nurtured over time.
Dan's greatest joy came from his family. He is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Rachel McGinnis, who was his steadfast partner throughout their many adventures. His legacy continues through his children: sons Chad McGinnis and wife Maria, Dean McGinnis and Rodney Wallace; daughters Susie Byars, Jana Moore and husband Jacob, and Dana McGinnis-Flinn and husband Mike. The warmth of his love extends further to his beloved grandchildren, Ginger, Garrett, Stephen, Andy, Wesley, Gretchen, Danny, Derrick, Molly, and Sawyer, along with numerous great grandchildren, each of whom held a special place in his heart.
Dan's vibrant spirit will also be remembered by many dear friends, who felt the impact of his generosity and kindness. He was preceded in death by his parents, George Drew McGinnis and Jimmie Lee Noble McGinnis, and his sister, Karen Smith, whose memories now join him in eternal peace.
